River & Blues featuring Valerie June
Event Details
Enjoy a summer evening listening to the blues while the sun sets over the Hudson River. Bring a picnic and your friends!
Valerie June’s “Organic Moonshine Roots Music” encompasses the musical heritage of her native Tennessee, mixing Appalachian folk, blues, gospel, soul, and country music with stunning originality. These musical elements are anchored together by June’s distinctive voice and expressed by June’s ebullient personality.
Although June’s music has a timeless quality, she is a contemporary songwriter who has written with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Booker T. Jones, and recorded with Meshell Ndegeocello and John Forté. After self-releasing three albums, her debut album as a signed artist, Pushin’ Against a Stone, was released in 2013. Rolling Stone ranked the album at No. 44 on their 50 Best Albums of the Year.
“June has the most strikingly individual delivery I’ve heard in ages, a reedy, piercing intonation that cuts straight to the quick.” Andy Gill, The Independent
Located at the southern end of Battery Park City Parks Conservancy’s 36 acres of green spaces, Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park is a beautiful and expansive setting, with the stage just feet from the Hudson River. River & Blues occurs on four Thursday evenings in July.
